Hi, check out the top right "2" circle on this stamp. Does this look like an inking error, or is it something else?

Hi Moon, and welcome to this forum. On my computer your picture shows out of focus. The '2' looks like it may have some plate scratches in it, but it is hard to tell. Could you maybe re-scan your stamp?

With a line engraved print like your stamp, inking errors show as a lack of ink, any line of color usually is the result of some sort of plate damage, like a scratch from a dropped tool.

Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner. I took another picture, but I don't know that it's much clearer.

Anyway, are you talking about the marks in the center of the 2? I see similar marks on a couple of other black jacks that I just checked.

I was actually asking about the white space around the ball at the top of the 2, where it is usually all black, like this:

OK, now I see it. Looks like a lack of ink in that spot. Could be something got stuck to the plate and no ink was transferred at this spot. I do not believe this qualifies as an error, but it could be an oddity?

Yeah, "error" was probably a poor choice of words. I just wanted another opinion on whether it was an issue with the inking/printing, as opposed to a plate variety, since the aberration has a distinct shape and edges, particularly in the crescent inside the top of the 2.

I am no expert on US stamps, but, was always under the impression that these were called "Double Transfers"(?) Is this the correct definition?

Bujutsu....a "double transfer" is when the plate was strick 2x immediately...
Also a "kiss print".
This is just a "light overink"

Thanks for the clarification Kevin

My US collection isn't that large and the varieties are lacking.
