I've tried a few searches and haven't found much. What is the history of cancellation ink and ink pads from the stampless covers up to the end of the classic period? Obviously no synthetic sponges existed at the beginning.

Got any good reference sites?

OK I just done a LOT of digging for you so I hope that there is at least something amongst all this information that you can use or at least help you "dial it in" a little more.

Well there are these:

https://goscf.com/t/37738&SearchTer...tion,devices

http://www.officemuseum.com/mail_machines.htm (This one is a great one too)

http://www.officemuseum.com/stamps.htm (I think this one has the most relevance to your question about the ink pads)

Here is the Catalog of Non-Standard postmarks (Might have a useful hint or clue in there)

http://content.yudu.com/Library/A1e...ources/3.htm

https://goscf.com/t/5809&whichpage=3

This might have some clue hat may help you dial in better your specific query

In 1971 I personal had an office supply place make a FDC hand stamp and pad with local post master approval. On the left was a circle with Morgan City & July 1, 1971 and on the right were 4 cancellation lines with First Day of Issue . I sat in the post office lobby on a desk the local Post Master supplied me and hand cancelled the Scott 1396 USPS Emblem stamp on special envelopes the USPS provided for postal patrons all day and explained what FDCs were. Every post office in the US was designated as a FDC post office and I thought the cover would look nicer than the regular mail cancellation. There is an account of it in Linn's a few years later; however I lost the hand stamp & pad, covers and most of my stamp collection after Katrina. Wish I had a sample.

Al,

7-1-71 was a big deal. See http://www.remcatalog.com/
I'm sure there are examples out there to be had.

Thomas

That's a very nice way to introduce people to stamp collecting. It's also very kind of you to put the time and effort into it. I'll take a look for the Linn's article.

I also lost my stamp collection to flooding. Fortunately for me it was a very simple collection. That must have been devastating for you. It sounds like you not only lost a collection that took years to build, but lost or had your home damaged.

Yes, we lost our home and everything we had except clothes on our back due to the Corps of Engineer gross negligent construction. We won our case all the way to Federal Supreme Court; however there is a 1928 Federal law that prevents getting a judgement and recovering any damages from the Corps of Engineers. Many people still continue the myth hurricane Katrina was the cause for New Orleans flooding. False. The damages are more than physical and will continue until death for many of us I am afraid. Hard when you have had a home paid for since 1983 and because of this event, at age 71, having to now pay a mortgage until you die. In an instant everything in your life can be taken from you.

It's sad how true that is, even though our society has progressed this far.

I'll keep an eye out for one of your covers.

I have about 200 of these first day covers, but none from Morgan City. I will keep an eye out. It's my daughter's name, so it will be easy for me to remember.
