Calvert's Custom Blended Help

Hi Everyone, I please need help with this Calvert's Custom Blended Specimen. What exactly is this? Is it a revenue tax stamp, a bottle seal or just some kind of label. I have looked it up and can't find much on it, someone sold something similar not to long ago on ebay and had it as a cigar band, which I am pretty certain it is not. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not an expert in the field, but the label was probably affixed to the bottle to show proof of a tax paid for the alcoholic beverage, thus it's a revenue usage.

The collecting discipline can be a "crossover" between (revenue) stamps and currency, I suppose, depending on what your interests may be. It would appear the "specimens" were made by a security bank note company, which can often be the same people who print both stamps and currency and stock certificates and other "security" documents for different countries.

Why would this one have the numbers it has? Was this a trial printing?

As far as I can see, this had no revenue use whatsoever. It was a probably label created for one of their high end brands, probably bonded whiskey which came in a numbered bottle. Assuming it was ever actually used.

If the specimen shown wasn't actually used for revenue purposes, what would have been the point to engage a security printing firm such as the American Bank Note Company to create a numbered bottle label? One would think the only reason for the security company printing would have been to thwart counterfeiting on something as important as a revenue tax stamp.

It seems to me the "label" could have been created at much lower cost through another source if there were no security concerns necessary.

Of course, as suggested above, it is entirely possible that it could have simply been a proposal that never got off the drawing board and was never put into use.

High end liquor can be very expensive even back than, and having numbered bottles has been done by others. It's part of the guarantee of genuineness that an expensive brand might have. It's part of the marketing process as well, since this would have been on a product aimed for wealthy people who would be showing their "good taste" by buying and using this product. A security type label on very high end or upwardly mobile products (especially alcohol and tobacco products)is an old story.

I am also now thinking these must have been some kind of label just numbering the bottles to guarantee they were authentic. Thank you all for the help.
