Fifth Issue Series 1875

According to the Boston Book, the 1875 Series Revenue Issue was first issued on 5 Oct 1875. Of course that does not mean any of this issue was actually used in 1875. Does anyone has an on instrument tied readable cancel?

I assume you mean a readable 1875 cancel. I only have 2 of the fifth issue stamps on documents -- one is uncancelled and the other has an 1879 manuscript cancel.

I do not understand why you mentioned you have two documents, if they do not have a 1875 readable cancel from the 1875 Series!

The fifth issue is the Liberty Head issue, and I have certainly seen checks from 1875 with that stamp used on them. Remember that there were both silk paper stamps of 1875 and watermarked stamps issued in 1878 with the same design, so only the silk paper stamps will have been used in 1875.

Revcollector, thanks for your input, especially with mention that you have seen instruments with that stamps on them, very interesting, hope I can find one, but rather doubt it as I've been looking for a long time, but guess one just never knows.

There were over 228 million issued between both papers, and the survival rate for checks from that period is fairly high. Even a 20% survival rate means 45 million stamps. If 20% of those are still on checks it would be 9 million. If only one tenth of one percent of them were used in the three months of 1875 it would still be 9000 examples, so there should be readable examples around to be found. It just takes a lot of looking at stamps.
