Just browsing comparing Mystic Stamp CO./ Kenmore and ebay and ran across this and figured I would ask, is it a good deal?

The seller has issued their own Cert., yes I know some frown on that,I don't see any stamp affiliation association either, APS or other.

I thought catalog value mint meant post office fresh vs his Cert. says hinged remnant, so maybe the value isn't $4500.00!! catalog as his auction headline says? Just asking...Just wondering aloud what the true value would be of this stamp (yes I know-->value=whatever someone is willing to pay for it.) but ballpark value?

No worry just looking...

Wouldn't even consider that stamp... forget the fact that Tropical plays their "cert game" with unwary collectors... this stamp is horribly re-perfed and (maybe) worth 1/3 or less of the seller's asking price...

If you're comfortable in that pricerange, I'd sooner make a $700 offer to Langs on the one below... he (might) just accept it or counter with something close...

Thanks Desi123. I like the Black grey stamps I am more of a used stamp price range anyway but I thought I would step out and learn something.

Besides what disi123 said, the catalog value for #77 Unused OG in Scott's Specialized 2013 edition is $1400, not $4500. No way would I trust a thing this seller says. If he is satisfied with $699, then you know it has to be worth a LOT less.

Two things wrong with it the top left corner missing perf (looks like perf torn off) and the hinged remnant not being shown. Why is the seller not showing the back of the stamp if they expect $699? They have reduced it for a reason. It makes no sense to offer it on buy it now at $699 then say cat value $4500 in the title. I steer clear of items with titles like that. Try and resell it for $4500 I bet you would not get that amount. Without seeing the back I cannot determine what it would really be worth. I doubt it sells I can think of better things to spend $700 on.

Larry--Can you see how the top and probably the left side of your stamp are reperfed, as disi123 says? Nothing more bogus than some fly-by-night collectibles dealership issuing its own "certificate of authenticity." Expert Committee my a$$.

Yes your right Dudley/Desi top and left a bit chewed up, Perfs. different depths.

I think this is the same seller I bought a block of 6 Scott #295 and they were taped together with hinges singles. I got a refund on that one...

I do like the other guys Cert. Desi posted seems way more ligit.

And I don't like that when requested people don't post copies of the back of their stamps, they are the experts and shouldn't be questioned..ha I don't think so...lol.

This remingds me of some UK sellers trying to sell 1d penny black four margin stamp for over 1000 pounds claiming them to be high value in the titles. Then only to find the stamps are rebacked. Now should sellers be able to issue their own certs? Someone should report the scott 77 item to ebay.

I have really enjoyed and learnt a lot from reading this thread. I've been collecting (mainly Australian)on and off for years but never with any level of intensity. I purchased a 2013 copy of the Scott Catalogue(US)and had it mailed to Australia recently. When I first got it I was bewildered with the depth of information (a lot of which went over my head). I've got the Brusden White Catalogues for Australia and they can be a handful, too.

It was very informative to read of the re-perfing and when pointed out, it was so obvious. I was also reading the thread on the Orangeburg 389. That was also enlightening.

Anyway, thanks to all contributors and Merry Xmas from Down Under.
Stephen

Ugh.

No.

If I had $700 to spend on a 77 I would look to spend it on something like this:

A stunning used example.

Bill... nice stamp indeed... but I wouldn't drop over $300-$400 for a canceled 77 no matter how nice it was... I'd go $700 on Lang's stamp every day of the week and twice on Sundays...

I wouldn't pay that much for a torn stamp.

IMO the Tear? $3-400 stamp.

When you see a 'self-cert' used as a marketing tool, RUN (don't walk) away!
