darn! I done good. thought y'all get this one fast. Perhaps a clarification. It was a 3 step process and he did finish
them off with a grenade down the in the inside. So perhaps I should say how did he get the tanks stopped?
I actually gave 1/2 of a clue in the original description. Another part of the clue is on wikipedia. Perhaps that will help.
I did a search and found all kinds of neat stuff about. Red Buttons was nominated for an academy award for
best supporting actor (back when an academy award actually meant something).
Also another interesting tidbit. The national TV premiere for "Imitation General" was scheduled the evening that
Pres. Kennedy was assassinated and thus postponed.

ok! this is not a clue, just a comment. I was eleven years old when I first saw this. And his trick or ploy maybe, was just amazing to me. My friend and said. Wow1 it was so neat and it was funny.

was this the movie that they added sugar to the fuel tanks after the got stuck in the mud,thus stopping them from being of use?

Wow! I can't believe no one remembers this. It was so cool.
I think I saw it again on TCM a few months ago.
Anyway as best I remember : the Germans were advancing and the
real general in command there gets killed.Dean Jones comes to report
and thinks Glenn Ford is the general. Dean Jones was sent to
get orders on what to do and he tells them these tanks are coming.
Glenn Ford sees the helmet in Dean Jones hand and the fact that his is muddy. He gets an idea on how to get the tanks.He takes a
helmet fills it with mud then hides till a tank comes along,
takes the mud and throws in the view ports of the tank so they can't see. the tank stops, a German pops out of the top and Glenn
throws a grenade into the tank.even even seeing it at 60 years old it's still cool.
OK- same prize. will have another War movie TQ this afternoon.

I would have guessed a tank hole--our Uncle talked about almost drowning in one after a big rain and he fell in one. Actually, it saved his life--all but 6 other guys were shot by machine gun--the tank hole saved his life ,but it was so deep and muddy he kept sliding back in until he got out.

Ok! Give me a minute here. got it down to questions. got to coose one and try to phrase it accurately.

It is totally amazing the information you can find on a subject on the internet in a couple of minutes. So, I try to find questions
that you can't find. It ain't easy, although I must admit I did pretty good on "Imitation General"
Anyway, this is the setup for the question.
The movie is: "Operation Petticoat". Starring: Cary Grant &
Tony Curtis. Also loaded with other stars and veteran character
actors. Great, Great picture. All deserved an Academy Award.
Ok, so The story is their submarine has bent sunk, they got up and running but barely. Tony Curtis has made a deal with the Captain
(Cary Grant) to be supply officer. and they supplies to repair the
ship. Parts, etc., etc. now, Tony, the supply officer is something of a conman procurer and being from New York , not above theft.
Anyway, Tony and his crew are off "procuring" supplies and they just
happen to "procure" a pig from an island farmer. After a really funny
scene they get the pig past the MPs and onto the ship.
