A vertical pair is on sale under # 151588747734.
It has the plate number on top, and I do not believe I have ever seen such a coil pair before. The plate # is 6539.
I wonder if this really is a coil pair?

Peter

Thanks, Kevin!
I wished you could elaborate a little? Is the plate number smack in the middle of the strip or what?

Since the lot number will not lead to the lot/image after a few months, here is the photo from the ebay listing.

Petert4522....
sheets were taken and (in this case) pasted into strips vertically....from top to bottom....to make coils...
where joined
they are called paste-up pairs

Naturally a plate # is only on 1 position of the sheet...
a paste up pair will occur every 10 stamps....
a paste up pair with plate #...every 100 stamps

Kevin504, I'm sorry in advance if this seems a foolish question. Were they pasted as sheets and then cut into strips?

most logical way.
I will have to research that.

I believe the process for Flat plate coils was: Sheets of 400 were cut in half to sheets of 200 then pasted together, then perforated and cut into coil strips, edges trimmed, then coiled into rolls of 500 or 1000.

Were not such plate numbers usually pasted over in coil paste up strips?

Pasted over? Yes. This would have been used as a strip of 3 or more with the plate number covered by the rest of the strip as a paste-up. Soaking that longer strip from the cover separated the 2 pieces and revealed the plate plate number, which does not have any postal cancel over the numbered selvage.
