My 2011 Scott Specialized makes no mention of "large date" vs "small date" variations between 2903 and 2904 (mountains), 2908 and 2909 (tailfin), or 2911 and 2912 (juke box) but the date sizes are different in each of these cases. White Ace picked up on this and makes note of the differences on their printed album pages. Date sizes are not necessary to identify the stamps; other characteristics distinguish which is which, but Scott usually mentions not only the existence of date size variations, but also gives the date dimensions (see notes after 2905,3270A or 3281).

I like to include this info in my own cataloging, and I can measure the dates myself once I obtain copies of each variety, but I was wondering if that information has appeared in Specialized catalogs published since my 2011 version?

My 2013 Scott Specialized Catalog makes no mention of the date sizes (although date size differences are obvious), but as you suggest, there are color intensity and other variations that easily distinguish one from the other. In fact, the Jukebox (2911) has a blue date whereas (2912) has a black date.

Interestingly, my 2014 Postal Service Guide to US Stamps simplifies the Jukebox ID even further by suggesting (2911) is Bureau printing whereas (2912) is private printing, which makes it even easier to glance at the changes rather than reading all of the footnotes about the variances in the Scott Specialized Catalog.

I would guess that Scott ignores the date dimensions because the difference is so dramatic, both in length & height. The large dates appear about twice the size of their smaller counterparts. Not nearly as challenging as the dates on the three 2905 varieties (2905, 2905a, 2905b). But since two of these are minor varieties, White Ace doesn't include them.
2903 vs. 2904: Small date on 2903 extends to the left edge of the N in NONPROFIT ... the large date on 2904 extends to the right edge of the N.
2908 vs. 2909: Small date on 2908 extends to the right edge of the F in First ... the large date on 2909 extends past the right edge of the i.
2911 vs. 2912: Small date on 2911 extends to the right edge of the P in Presorted ... the small date on 2912 extends past the right edge of the r.
As a rough estimate, I would place the small date at 1.25mm & the large at 2.25mm (length).
