As Smauggie indicated the dye has "bled" out to the perforations. Looking closely you will also notice that the postmark ink has been affected in the discolored areas so whatever happened to this stamp (likely some chemical) occurred after it was postmarked. The lower left corner has several creases and just to the right is a missing perf and it looks like a thin in the bottom of the stamp also.
Personally, I would put this in the circular file. |

that part you think is a splash is a thin in the perf area, but I agree something probably was spilled on it and affected the ink, and the cancel as bj points out. I hadn't notice the part of the cancel on the collar where it turned white, before; just too coincidental. |

Experiment conducted yesterday. Here is bleach soaked, full strength ,yesterday on the same type stamp about 3/4" bleach deep, stamp fully covered for 20 min. and completely dried today and scanned. Seems both has some yellow the unbleached and the bleached, of course the bleached is a little lighter it is on the right. |

yes I was surprised it did not do more damage, I am soaking it again we want annihilation ha! Humm stamp, pants, pocket, washing machine, eh I just did laundry. His stamp don't seem to have creases like it was in a washing machine anyway.
Maybe someone that has varnish remover or finger nail polish remover can experiment, umm in a well ventilated area maybe...
that yellow seems to be under the brown, I dunno, fun playing detective whatever..

Just so you all don't think you're alone in this, checkout this sad excuse for a Scott 814 (9c W.H. Harrison) stamp! |

I have this dingy old stamp that I have held onto because of it's odd appearance but it's likely due to the letter being stuck into a book and the the rest exposed to the sun (or elements?) so that's my odd "Prexie" for you.

So it isn't bleach, and it doesn't look like a color splashed on it, the face is white, the collar is white, it is contained to the stamp design except for the boarder where the yellow follows along the boarder in a straight line. That bring me back to a printing error. Iv'e been trying to get a better shot of this with my camera.
What is needed is a better scanner |

Nope, not printing error. Take a stamp and protect half of it. Put it in full unfiltered sunlight for a few days. Report back. |
