R196 Hand Scribed Precancel With Four Diff. Dates

Hi All

Terrible condition block that came with a nice group mix of early revenues a few years ago. I was not impressed with this stamp, first thought toss it into the box to ship to the VA Hospital. But then got to looking at the cancel dates. Four different dates 10 July, 11 July, 12 July, and 13 July 1915.

So now it has a place in my stock book, and soon will be making a frame for it to sit on my desk, in its right and proper place. More of a remainder to always examine every stamp!





Do other members have similar examples on revenue stamps? Would like to see others.

I do not recall ever seeing something like this before, in theory there should be no reason to do so. Perhaps someone needed one stamp a day for some reason and used sheets as a calendar, or possibly someone was just bored. Interesting oddity.

Does it have gum?

It was probably a large piece pasted into a ledger book. Each time a tax was due, even a penny, another stamp was signed/cancelled.

The block has full original gun, but has been hinged.

chasa, what you said makes sense! All I have to do now is find a ledger book with revenue stamps cancelled this way.

If it has full OG it might well have never been used. Since technically the tax was paid when the stamps were purchased it did not matter if they were cancelled in the sheet to save time. I don't know of any one cent taxes at all in that time period, let alone one that could have used these one day at a time; it looks more to me like someone was just bored or playful.

Is it just my eyes or is there something odd about that sequence of dates?

Three of them appear to be consecutive dates in July 1915. But the year date on the stamp in UL corner looks to me like a 14. Is that right? It certainly does not look like the other three, and yet the month and day appear to be in the same sequence as that behind the other three. 7/ 10-11-12-13

Same person, same ink, so it seems unlikely that there really was a year in between cancelling these stamps. Probably a mistake of some kind.

essayk, it appears to me (and of course I very well could be wrong) that the person was in a hurry when writing), to be a 4, but could also be seen as a misshaped 5. I think (and could be wrong) that the four different dates were written on four different days. The first day the person was in a hurry.

essayk, I must say, I've noticed many of your responses, and most of the time you offer a sensible ideas. I know when I see "essayk", then there will be something interesting to read, and who knows maybe learn something new! Again thanks for your posts!
