Lovely finds! I read this thread when it was fresh, and made note of the discussion of stitch watermarks. I came across on in the red box of revenues I picked up in Atlanta in Feb, but I couldn't recall where I filed it. I think my memory is going away.

Just ran across it again while checking that box for double transfers. The R18 is not all that great, but it is interesting never the less as it's the only revenue I have found with a stitch watermark. Haven't got the best photos, I hope you can see it.

So has anybody come to a conclusion of how prevalent these are?

They were written about in the 30's but I do not have that info available at hand. I will try to look tonight to see what was written at the time.

southpaw, you asked "So has anybody come to a conclusion of how prevalent these are?" I assume you are asked about Stitch Watermarks.

Stitch watermarks are caused by the stitches which join the ends of the band on which the paper pulp is first formed. So then stitch watermarks have been found on a great many stamps issues, and most likely exist on all "flat plate stamp issues"

Cheers

Dave

I usually see at least 5-6 stitch watermarks per year, so they are not raving rarities as a general observation. But if you try searching for one on a specific stamp, as revcollector says, you could go a lifetime and never find one!

There was a list compiled in 1928 in the Revenue Unit Column of the AP magazine of over 100 revenues known with stitch watermarks with more added over the next few years.
