Does anyone have this same cancel on document/instrument? Most of these R164's were used on bank checks. They occur on other document/instruments also!

I expect the "F. N. B." would be First National Bank, so perhaps this stamp was on a back check. Unless the F. N. B. would be something else, but I say its a safe bet it came from a bank check.

Would like to see an on document/instrument usage that is clearly readable.

While the N.B. probably do stand for National Bank, the F. might stand for a particular city, town, or state just as easily as First.

I'm wondering what the shapes are on either side of "1898." They almost look like parts of a map.

My first and second thoughts were the shapes were letters, but just could never make any sense out of them.

Parts of a map sounds reasonable to me, but I just do not know.

Hope somebody has seen or have one of these on document/instrument with a clear orientation.

I haven't seen it before but that really means little given the many millions that were used, by 1898 checks and other financial paper were commonly used every day. I think the design on the sides is just that, a design with no other meaning.

I see your point very well as it means very little!

Funny tho its a mystery, and I thought I might just as well ask everybody.

Don't expect now to get any other input from the other members.

Revcollector, my first sentence was ill written by me, I just reread it again, and I did not say what I meant to say, hope you did not take offense, offense was not intended.

What I meant to say was "I see your point, and as you say it means little given the many millions that were used", I agree with what you were saying, I just said it wrong. Again sorry.

Dave,

I reread your message and I see what you were saying. That's why I sent you an email, I misunderstood. Any way with my little experience collecting revenues I haven't seen that cancel before. My specialty is cancels on the US Large Banknotes. I would like to find cancels like the one posted on my Battleships.
I am still busy with the web site you and revcollector sent me on the Battleships.

There's a myriad of unattributed cancels out there, and not just from the 19th century. Without finding examples on documents, we may never know.

I am still trying to determine the origin of the two cancels below, presumably from the same company.

And one of my all-time Civil War era favorites. I've since found a second example on a $1 denomination, but no clue as to identity. A crowned globe or circle with monograms in the crown and the globe.
