Although there have been discussions in this topic that seemed to want to limit the question of who flew the first airmail to airplanes, it should be noted that the first OFFICIAL airmail flight occurred in 1859 in a gas balloon piloted by John Wise. I've attached a page describing the flight our of a 20-page souvenir booklet from a Centennial Celebration of the First Official Air Mail Flight that occurred in 1959. Incidentally, group that put this 100 year celebration together include a Philatelic Committee consisting of H. George DeKay, Edward B Wisman, Clare Conn, Everett Closson, and Glen Sperandio, and a Post Office Committee consisting of Albert L Pyke, Alice G. Munger, Dwight C. Goodhar, Donald A. Bartlett, and John O. Evans.
