These stamps from my grandfather who started his collecting in the early 1900s. The first is scott 1 the second is 1a? I have question about the 2nd stamp, the P in post office has extra line. also the shading of the S top right seems to be made up of circles. Is this normal. Thanks for any help

I don't see a 1a here. Both stamps look like they fall within the normal range for a basic #1 - red brown.

As for the shading on the "S" - no, the normal shading was not done in circles. I can see the pattern you are referring to in your picture, but I think it may be a moiré pattern due to the lighting for that image. Try changing the direction that the light hits it, or, if it was scanned, try rotating the stamp 90 degrees and scan it again to see if the pattern changes.

If it is persistent, then we will need a much higher resolution picture of just that letter "S" in order to try to figure out what is going on (or at least I would).

I scanned the stamp again upside down and the circles in the shading of S are less. thanks
