Hi All

I also have two cancels for the "Northern Securities Company", one on R181 dated 11 Dec 1901, (will not show it, the cancel is very faded, and needs large amount of enhancement). Also have on R189 which is shown below dated 12 Dec 1901.

The reason I'm showing you my example is so you can see the full cancel. These R189 can at least in the past be had for cheap prices if you look in the right places.

Still and interesting find Revenuecollector!

Cheers

For members who might want more general information related in small detail with the "Northern Securities Company", go to 1898Revenues Blog, and look up the 23 April 2011 Article titled "Stock Transfer + Power of Attorney by Separate Memorandum + the Panic of 1901" by Mr. Frank Sente.

The 1898Revenue blog is owned by Mr. John Langlois, a wealth of information about the 1898 Series Revenues, I also have many of my plate varieties listed and pictured there, along with lots of information/background on revenue cancels!

Did you see the sock certificate with 3 2c revenue stamps from the 1860's on Pawn Stars TV show this week? It was an American Express certificate signed by Wells and Fargo.

What did they say it was worth?

Those are normally found with a single 5-cent stamp, so the three 2-cent stamps likely overpaid the tax by a cent. I have seen asking prices of $1,000-3,000 on ebay, but I doubt anyone is biting at those prices. More soiled examples can be seen in the $300-600 range.

I believe the customer wanted $2500, the expert said $400-500, I think. They were more focused on the signatures rather than the stamps though.
