Since it now appears this is real. The PO could use the revenue from a hot ticket like the Simpsons, even none collectors will want these stamps.

I think they would go over well WW as well. Much like Elvis and Star Wars, there is a built in non stamp collector audience.

stamperdude, I was also in my early teens when the Simpsons came out. We must be about the same age.

Someone brought up the Simpsons in class the other day and I told them about the stamps and several people were very interested and wanted to know when they could get them. These are people that do not collect stamp, one lady did collect Simpsons stuff, though.

The controversial The Simpsons stamps will be officially released May 7, 2009 in Los Angeles, CA. Here is a link to the USPS postal bulletin with the details.

Now if I can only convince the Springfield IL tourism dept to sponsor a FDOS pictorial postmark....

I've got mixed emotions about this. One one hand, it's not really anything new for the USPS to issue stamps with pop-culture icons. On the other hand, it seems to me like this kind of cheapens the USPS in a way, because this is somewhat of a change in policy that was in effect up to the mid-80s or so. It's almost like they are using such issues in order to balance their books.

I guess, though, that if it attracts new collectors to the hobby, that's not really a bad thing, so long as they keep the iconography in the minority in comparison to historic-based issues, which are much more educational in nature. I guess, though, that today's pop culture is tomorrow's history, but what does it really say about the country, or indeed, about any country that utilizes such things on their stamps? It's almost a credibility issue...

I would put this upcoming The Simpsons release in the same pop culture category as Looney Toons, Elvis, Star Wars, Peanuts, Comic Strip Classics, Hollywood Actors, The Muppets, Storybook Characters, Marvel & DC comics, and the Celebrate the Century series stamps. As we all know there are many facets of American culture & history that can be represented on stamps and I believe that all areas have the right to be represented for current and future generations of those whom choose to enjoy the hobby of kings, queens, and presidents.

Drudenfus,
I live in Springfield, IL. I can help you with that. I already have a cachet idea for my own covers. We have a wonderful philatelic clerk whom will be more than happy to cancel items.

There is a FDOS pictorial postmark for Springfield IL 62703 available at the Cook Street PO. I do not know which character is featured. Just found out this morning.

The postmark features Homer Simpson dropping a bowling ball on his foot.
