Beginner collector of coil lines and plate number coils questions.
I purchased a large lot of coil line stamps from pavstamps on ebay. I started the process of cataloging them into my EZStamp program. I discovered that I received coil line stamps with a hint of a plate block number on them. I did not know that coil stamps had plate block numbers. I thought the only numbers on coils were plate numbers of usually 1 or 2 digits. I will try to include a few images to give you examples. One image is the back side. I would like to get educated about this and can't find any info online so thought I would try this forum which I just joined. Thanks, Don

Hi Don, and a very welcome to this forum. I only collect coils with those little plate numbers ( PNC's ). But I can tell you about the older coils. Yes, these were coils printed by the BEP, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and they used plate numbers, just like the sheet stamps did.
The plate numbers were supposed to be cut off from the coils. If you look at your pictures, all your examples are miscut to a more or lesser extent. Miscut or not, partial plate numbers on coils are a specialty in itself, and are much sought after by some collectors! Hope this helps a bit?

Agree with Peter - if you can identify the plate numbers, there is a premium value, and if the complete numbers are visible, they are much more desirable.

Chips, the second part of your question was about the line in the middle? That line is caused by the joint between two plates and is therefor called a 'jointline' or a 'seamline'. These stamps were printed on a press with a round cylinder. Around this cylinder two plates were attached. Where these two plates met ink would build up in the crack and leave the line impression on the web ( sheet of stamps ).
