I'm looking for a good online resource in helping me in identifying this stamp. It is marked as #487. I feel it is more like a #488.

Since I'm restricted in the picture size which affects the resolution, I've gone ahead and posted a page to my website for better views of the stamp.

Thanks.

Perfs look a bit suspect to me, but you might find some additional online info at http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847usa/index.htm

It's positively a Type III 488...

If you view the right hand ribbon, the vertical lines
in the second curve are your indicator...

It is a rotary press vertical coil perf 10-80 using the Kiusalas gauge. The interior perforations cannot be faked or altered because no imperforate version of this stamp exists. Assuming it is a type III coil, it is likely to be the unwatermarked Scott 488. Type III vertical coils with a single line watermark are normally found with a brighter shade.

It should be noted that some rotary press perforation pins may be slightly bent and will punch out of alignment as the pater moves sideways relative to the row of pins. Flat plate line perforating pins move in the direction of the row causing perforation holes to be slightly elongated in the direction of the row. Rotary press perforation holes may be elongated at right angles to the row.
