I just won this stamp on ebay. I was looking at the scan, and the stamp appears to have been re-perforated at the top and possibly the right as well. Since I am new at recognizing re-perforations, I would like to know what the family thinks about this stamp, whether I'm correct or not, and what edge(s) are re-perforated (if any).

Thanks for the help!

Why were there 6 bidders on such a common stamp?

The perfs look fine. Why would anyone bother to reperforate a stamp as common as this one?

@Glenn Not sure. I browsed sold listings for used #65's on ebay, and the average selling price is around $1.50 or so. I bid on it because *turns bright red* I don't have a #65.... I also noticed the perforations, and wanted to view it in person.

@revcollector and @stallzer Maybe for practice...? I don't know, but they just look suspicious to me.

Because the previous owner had OCD (or worse) and liked everything as "perfect" as possible.

I agree with revcollector & think the perfs are genuine. What looks "suspicious" to you? Remember there were a couple billion of these produced (or something like that -- it's a huge number.) Perf pins would wear, break, etc. The perfs on this stamp look 100% typical, sides are parallel, gauge top-to-bottom & side-to-side is exact, etc. No reason to be suspicious IMO.

I think the original question is a good one.

I believe the perfs are legit, but to a novice collector, the irregular nature of perfs on stamps in this era can cause confusion - I know it did for me when I first started specializing in classic US stamps. I don't have a lot of time at the moment, but maybe another member can provide a link to another thread or website that will educate themachine99 (and any lurkers out there) on perforations on classic US stamps.

Thanks guys for the help, what looked especially suspicious to me was the 5th perf. left from the top-right. Notice how wide it's width is compared to the other perforations. The right side simply appeared a bit ragged to me, with somewhat uneven perforations.

A link or two to informative sites would be most welcome. In the meantime, I'll search around a bit and see what I can find.

Again, I appreciate all your help!
