I have the Harris Catalog, which apparently isn't as completely for US stuff as I thought it was. My Lighthouse album has the great american's series and then another page for the reissues, i'm trying to find the re-issue scott numbers for the following. I'm thinking maybe they all just have a letter at the end or something.
Perforations are all 11 1/4 x 11
2169 Untagged 2170 Untagged 2171 Untagged Blue Violet 2171 Untagged Grayish Violet 2173 Untagged 2175 Overall tagged 2175 Prephosphored Lake 2175 Prephosphored Carmine
2177 Overall Tagged 2177 Prephosphored 2179 Prephosphored 2181 Overall tagged 2181 Prephosphored 2187 Prephosphored 2188 Overall Tagged 2194 Overall Tagged 2194 Prephosphored 2196 Prephosphored
2943 Prephosphored Dull Violet 2943 Prephosphored Pale Violet
Thanks!

One other note. Don't know whether it will help much but all of the 2179b (Apgar bright red brown) come from plate # B3. Conversely, all B3 Apgars are 2179b. In fact, all of the 2179 varieties are on prephosphored paper with the tagging appearing grainy solid. The varieties are: 2179 ... red brown (plates B1 or B2) 2179a ... orange brown (plates B1 or B2) 2179b ... bright red brown (plate B3) Due to gradation in shading, there seems to me to be some overlap between 2179 and 2179a. If you find a plate B3 though, you know you have 2179b. |

Thank you so much for the help! I think I need to pick up an older scotts catalog (I only collect to 1999), I saw this Harris one at the local hobby store and figured it would be enough to identify the stamps in my album.
I appreciate the efforts you put into this, as well as the additional information, it might make these a little easier to find! |

Found one typo in my list. 2194d should read dark blue, prephosphored with a solid appearance, dull gum. |

Since you don't have a Scott, you might try your public library. I usually photocopy a page or two out of the US Specialized at my library each year. The three Great Americans groupings are spread across 7 pages of my Scott. You could just photocopy those pages ... unless, of course, there are other series/stamps that you need to check on. |

Thats a good idea. These are the only really confusing ones i've found so far and i've been through all of my albums finding the scott numbers of missing stamps. Most of the time I can search with the information on the pages and find the scott numbers but I wasn't able to find much information about the varieties in this series online. I've already spent my stamp budget for the month (i made it to the 2nd), so i'm probably going to have to wait a few weeks before picking these up! |
