Good day to all. This George 2 cent appears to be coil, perf.10 with slight red color on perfs, not well centered, and used....Is this a type 2 ?. This came in the group of mix world stamps I received. Can some one please help me to identify? Thank you in advance.

Blazenstar,

Are you sure is is perf 10? Looks to be an 8 1/2. If so, it would be a 413. If perf 10, either 455 (sl) or 492 (no watermark). I only see one shading line in the right ribbon. The picture is poor.

Chasa,
Right you are. Do you think its an 8 1/2 (413)?

Blazenstar,
Watermarking is really, really difficult. Especially SL.

you cant count them, you have to use a perf gauge, this is the best place there is to figure out washington franklins http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847usa...rankmain.htm

Blazenstar,

You can generally count the horizontal perfs. But not the vertical. That's because its the number of perfs per 20mm. Best to use a gauge.

It's unquestionably a 413... no need to count or even try to...
anyone familiar with perf 8-1/2 can tell by looking at it...

For clarity's sake... here's a 413 I extracted from an ebay listing...

(of course this particular one may be a bad re-perf job or even fake,
but you get the idea...

I only worry about fakes if the stamp is worth something but it used to be almost everyone had a reperfing machine in their house because the right size needle in a sewwing machine and some practice to get a good settting will do a good job, so you cannot go by the holes look good or are straight.
