@Al E. Gator - You are quite right that such a genuine, cut apart single might NOT cert based on the dimension requirements. That's exactly what I meant to suggest earlier. Just because it's too small to cert as a single doesn't mean it is not genuine. It just means that an expert can't give an opinion that it is genuine based on the evidence they have.

At least one or two alleged 315's without certs are available on ebay almost every month, so there are a lot of small genuine singles, or trimmed perfed stamps, out there that will not cert.

cjpalermo1964, That's why I posted that one. That pair is on ebay now. I thought that pair demonstrates well what you were saying. I know there has to be a criteria in place for judging the singles to be sure about what's being cert'ed. It'd be nice if there were another difference between the 304 and 315 but there isn't.

I just measured with fractional caliper. As Bill earlier mentioned, this stamp is smaller than 21mmx 25mm. Surely trimmed. Thanks for the great input on this thread! Helped out a lot!

Can't imagine it happening, but if this pair were separated, and cut a bit close to the right stamp, I wonder if that stamp could get a cert.? Makes me wonder how many 315's there are out there that won't cert.?

Answer - Yes it could - if the expert service was supplied with a picture of it when it was in the pair. About a year ago I certified as genuine a used #315 with very small margins - because it was accompanied by the PFC for the pair from which it was cut from.

It is more difficult to certify an UNUSED single that was cut from a pair because it may be hard or impssible to be sure you have a "match" where it was cut from the other stamp since you are only comparing a smaller-size picture of a pair whereas you are studying a single. Used would be easier because the cancellation would help a lot.

Maverickx,

Sorry to hear about your 315. If the same measurement apply to 314's and 320,s, then my 314 is a fake. The 320 made it thru OK. I'm still in the hunt for a 315.

Just curious whether the folks here familiar with the 315 would opine on whether the one below is genuine and could get a cert. The dimensions on this one just eyeballing it on a Unitrade perf gauge are 25 X 21. The top, left side middle and bottom right also look not entirely straight. Thanks in advance for any comments.

size is a guide, not a sure thing or even a good bet, once alot of fakes are known for something then you just dont want to buy it without a cert.
