Yep. Photo was taken at Braves Field. Winingest left handed ML pitcher of all tome and didn't win his first game until he was 25 years old (WWII). Was the most decorated solder in the Major Leagues - Purple Heart, Bronze Star, battlefield commission. Was called off the Remaegan Bridge just minutes before it fell into the Rhine. They don't have people like that today.
Wow!..that photo brings back memories..i had a Viewmaster reel of baseball players...Mantle, Berra etc..but the image I remembered most was the one of Warren Spahn....when I was a pitcher in Little League..i would lift my leg up high copying the stance of Mr. Spahn...looked weird and didn't help!...thanks!
He was called up to to the Braves in 1942. He refused to knock down a batter after Manager Casey Stengal told him to do so. Casey prompty sent him back to the minors (Milwaukee!!). Spahn was drafted into the army shortly thereafter. Casey later admitted it was the worst decision he ever made.
Years later, Casey became the manager of the Mets and brought Spahn and Yogi Berra aboard. This prompted Spahn to quip" "We aren't only the oldest battery in the Major Leagues, we're also the ugliest!
Spahn bought a restaurant (Warren Spahn's diner) on Commonwealth Avenue real near Braves Field (now BU's Nickerson Park) in late 1952. The Braves left for Milwaukee in March, 1953 prompting Spahn to quip - "My restaurant opened in Boston snd the Braves opened in Milwaukee"
