Not my stamp, but this caught my eye. Has the existence of two different NYFM cancellations on the same stamp been documented? I'm skeptical of this, especially since it's on a key value with two huge margins, even though there are a few small tears evident.

edit: as mentioned below, on closer inspection, I now believe this is a double strike of the same cancellation.

Kevin - no, I have not identified them conclusively. However, both of the main cancellations (not sure if there's a third at bottom left) appear to be NYFM cancellations to my eye, based on both design and size.

I don't have access to the Weiss reference, but looking at Frajola's study, I think the bottom rosette cancel is this one:

I was originally thinking that the top cancel was the one below (or one of a few similar designs), but now that I look closer I think it's actually the same rosette cancel as the one at bottom, except that the outer circle is very prominent on the top cancel, and practically nonexistent on the bottom one:

So, long story short, I'm pretty sure it's just a double strike of the same cancellation. It's interesting how they look so different on paper, though.

edit: Kevin - thank you for your probing questions. They annoyed me at first, but drove me to look closer and ultimately, I think, answer my own question. It wasn't until I actually tried to match up the top cancel with my presumption that I realized that I was looking in the wrong direction.

it looks like it has a repaired tear on right side, something is in that perf. Is this kind of cancel good ? because to me it just looks way heavy canceled but I dont know about early cancels I just look for neat looking ones or clean looking stamps.

Moon....not trying to annoy.

I do not now how to do "reverse cancel"....
The scan where the cancel is hi-lited in negative.

Im sure that will help here.

Kevin - in case it wasn't clear, my attitude towards your post quickly changed from annoyance to gratitude as I looked closer at the stamp I posted.

The images in my second post are taken directly from the Frajola study I linked there. They are not taken from the stamp I initially posted; I included them to help illustrate what I thought I was looking at on that stamp.

Thanks again for your questions. The more I look at it, the more I'm convinced that they are two strikes of the same cancellation.

The cancel appears to be a double-strike of the top illustrated cancel, not the bottom one, since the Rosette leaves are solid black. The cancels DO appear to be NYFM (fairly common on the higher value Banknotes). The stamp is reperforated at left, and may have improved perforations at bottom and right as well.

Moon - one minor point, the study you link to is hosted on Frajola's website, but is the work of Nick Kirke. Nick collects and exhibits the NYFMs.

Although Bill Weiss has retired, he has retained his web site and it has an online NYFM identifier. You can open it from the opening page at http://www.stampexpertizing.com

Yes, that's what I think as well. I included the second cancellation as an example of the type that I initially thought matched the top cancel on the stamp. I probably could have explained that better.

Well, that explains the "NK3.pdf" filename :) Thanks for the correction - I apologize for the misattribution.

Thanks Don. I've poked around Bill's site from time to time - not sure how I missed that link right in the middle of the homepage.
