You'll probably get more discussion of your question in the forum for modern US. The US classics forum mainly focuses on U.S. up to 1940.

Since I don't collect the modern stuff, my answer to your question would be, "Not to me it doesn't." But that isn't really what you are asking, is it?

tikithindi,

Stay away from them. Its a trap! Or else you'll be like me. Once I went down that slippery path, I then felt compelled to collect sheets right up to today. Very expensive and I'm still not sure I did the right thing. At least I am sticking to my guns and refuse to collect the imperforates. (Another slippery path designed specifically for the stamp collector.)

Except for a few issues, there is not much value to modern US stamps other than the value as postage. If a dealer is going to buy sheets from you, you'll probably receive about 40-50% of face value. The dealer will then sell the stamps at about 70% of face value to collectors.
