I recently obtained a collection which includes this 1 cent Franklin and although a little rough around the edges it still has it's charm. I'm having a little trouble with it's identification. Any of you more experienced with this issue please give me your opinions.
Thanks in advance,
Don

I'll be very interested to see how this is done. I'm assuming that the way in which the stamp was cut complicates the identification.

I think having the bottom of the stamp above it showing helps. That shows there are no balls on the end of the scrolls. I'm not experienced enough to say if the bottom line is re-cut.

With these you can't assume the stamp above is the same type as plates had different types. The bottom of the upper stamp you see is either a type II or type IV, the stamp itself looks to be type II but with the bottom being cut off, who knows. Looks as if it might have been recut once on the bottom.

For example Plate I early had types I, IB, II, & IIIA. The one above has guide dots so determining the plate & type is doable.

Ahhh I see. Thanks stallzer.

Of course, now it dawns on me, you can have a strip of three with say...two #9's and a #7.

A 7-9 combination is only possible in one location on Plate 1L. Position 4R1L is the lone Type II position on Plate 1L. Type IV stamps only come from Plate 1L.

The stamp shown above is a Type II, likely from Plate 2.
