Catch the Lightning (and other fast events)

Here's a photo postcard of lightning over The East River (NYC).

Since lucky timing is tough to arrange, the easy Old School Way to capture lightning was with a long exposure ... note the apparent width of the downward leader, which is actually a record of its instability.

OTOH, to be fair to the photographer, note that the surface of the water still shows texture (ripples etc), so the exposure could not have been for all that long.

A friend of ours works at the weather channel here in Atlanta. Some of his lightening pictures in color are spectacular.
