Someone in the USPS must really, really love sunset designs. It seems like the majority of the statehood stamps for the past decade or so have depicted them. This one is no different. It's a nice looking stamp. I just wonder if the design approval process is held in a vacuum- it's as if they don't have reference to the fact this has been done before, over and over.

I guess I haven't been paying attention. Still, I love this stamp. (It's for Iowa, right?)

I find myself in agreement with the original post. The same scene could effectively be found in any number of different states. You would think that statehood stamps would depict something for which the state in question is well known.

I wonder if this lack of imagination owes to the fact that it is cheaper to find some photographic image than to commission anything comparable to the engravings of the past.

It says it is for Indiana right on the stamp. But it could pass for Iowa, also. Which is the problem.

I think that the original hand drawn designs that they used to have were much better than the new photographic stamps they make today. I think they should try making a stamp with a design that hasn't been used many times before.

As insipid as it was, I sort of prefer the design Indiana got for their 150th anniversary in 1966. Bold colors, a map of the state and the state seal.

Apart from some background, if you see one sunset, you've seen them all.
