I have a number of 512s. I have 2 from plate block 6900. One has a top and bottom perf of 11 the other has a top perf of 10 and bottom of 11. The one with 11 perf is from the top margin as it has the plate # above the stamp. The one with the 10 perf is from the bottom margin as the plate number is under the stamp. Then on plate # 6902 the top perf under the block # is 10 perf and the bottom is 11.

I also have a wide variety of colors. Sometimes different shade with the same block #???

Thoughts?

Please provide a scan. If part of the perforation row along the bottom of the plate block is perf 10, then the affected stamps would be classified as Scott 512b "perf 10 on the bottom". The perforation row has a distinctive set of characteristics. A large image of a block of 25 showing the left transition and most of the row exists on the Philatelic Foundation web site for cert 446197:

http://pfsearch.org/pfsearch/images/446/446197.jpg

Country: United States Of America
Cat. No. Issue Denom. Color
498g 1917 1¢ green

BLOCK OF 25 WITH PLATE NO. 13366 AT TOP RIGHT, FOUR ERROR STAMPS WITHIN THE BLOCK, POSITIONS 9 AND 10 ARE PERF 10 AT BOTTOM, POSITIONS 14 AND 15 ARE PERF 10 AT TOP.

AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT

IT IS GENUINE, NEVER HINGED, POSITIONS 10 AND 15 PERF. 10 BETWEEN; POSITIONS 9 AND 14 WITH TRANSITIONAL PERFS BETWEEN, THREE PERFS AT LEFT PERF. 11, BALANCE AT RIGHT PERF. 10. * * * * * * * *

A 511a block of 30 containing the complete row also exists on the PF web site for cert 478705:

http://pfsearch.org/pfsearch/images/478/478705.jpg

Country: United States Of America
Cat. No. Issue Denom. Color
511a 1917 11¢ light green
511 1917 11¢ light green
TOP RIGHT CORNER MARGIN BLOCK OF 30 (10x3) WITH PART ARROW & PLATE NO. F13467 IN TOP MARGIN, PERFORATED 10 BETWEEN POS. 17-18/27-28, TRANSITIONAL PERFORATIONS BETWEEN POSITIONS 19/29.

AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT

IT IS GENUINE, NEVER HINGED. * * * * * * * * *

Hi Clark -

I am not sure how to respond. I have tried to puload some pics and get lost somewhere between when trying to optomize and up load to this forum. I could take some pics and email them. I also have a 511a I think. The 511a is from block # 7504.

You can also upload your images to a free hosting site like Imgur / photobucket and then just insert the IMG tags into your post, then you don't have to worry about the optimizer.

Thanks Stallzer -

I am using my cell phone camera. It appears that when I email to download onto my computer I am not able to save the pic. If I can work through that I might be OK

The two colors are claret brown [left] and copper red [center and right]. The left looks like perf 12x12 the others 10x10. Nice looking stamps. These are not the 'a' varieties.

This is all too confusing for me. I have found a local collector and member of a few of your associations. I will meet with him this week and see what happens.

Thanks to you all for your indulgence and input.

Thanks Chasa -

I thought there were only two colors for this stamp: claret brown and brown carmine. I do not se a listing for copper red.

There are 2 basic colors of the 12 cent, different catalogs name them differently, my Scotts Specialized lists 435a as copper red.

So does my pic show 512 claret brown and 512a brown carmine as there is no copper red for this stamp?
