This stamp is horrid, and I'll say it before Mr. Sinclair does. But I only paid a few bucks for it, and I'm pretty curious....

I think it is Plate 4, "E" Relief. The worst case scenario is that it is a bad copy of #22, Type IIIA. Best case is it's a full position Type Ic or III. I've tried to plate it, and haven't been able to. The plumes look very full as far as I can see it, and I'm hoping this has a chance to be a Ic. My luck, it will be a Ic swing position, and it'll have to stand as a IIIA.... :(

The stamp is scanned at 4800dpi, so it's pretty high res. I'd love it if any of the other platers could take a whack at it.....thanks in advance for the help! Ray

I think there is a pretty good chance that it is 43R4. You will have to see if you can find some other examples of the position to compare it to.

About the only thing I can see on this that approximates 43R4 would be the dot east of his nose, and maybe the small diagonal line north of ornament "O". Is that what you're seeing on this?

Admit that it's pretty weathered.....hard to see anything. I'll probably ask Richard Doporto if he has any copy of 43R4, since it isn't on the archive.

Thanks Winston......appreciate the help and happy holidays!
Ray

I am looking at the blank spot near ornament "W". I have a scan of 43R4 that I can email you.
