I was identifying my coil strips and I have an SA Coil (34c) Liberty. There is supposedly only 1 non-denominated SA coil (3453) with two versions: small date (major) and large date (3453b) die cut 10 vertically.

I have a SA coil but it measures 9.75...not even close to 10. The plate is 1111.

PNC image of 3453b

It is non-denominated, self-adhesive, and bold date.

Anyone have one they can check the die cut perfs?

Al

Well, 9.75 is pretty close to 10. All mine gauge around 9.75 too.

Angore, I have a PNC values list, published in 2014 and it lists three different varieties. These three are:
3453 jumbo die cut / bold black date ( a note after it states a "jumbo stamp" in the strip );
3453b bold black date;
3453 light grey date.
If I remember well, the jumbo stamp measures wider than the others.
Please go to http://PNC3.org for all information on these strips. Hope this helps?

Peter

the jumbo is just a freak stamp that is slightly wider than the others - it doesn't affect the die cut gauge at all

When I measure my 3453, I get 9.8 ... which, for all practical purposes is no different than 9.75. But the point is that Scott will occasionally round perf/die-cut measurements off/up. But only if no stamps of the same design have perf/die-cut measurements close to the stamp in question. Since, as you pointed out, there is no other non-denominated SA stamp of the same design, rounding the measurement cannot lead to a mistaken identification.
Now WHY they did this only for the SA stamp is an entirely different question. They do list the WAG stamp (3452) as perf 9.75. And, interestingly enough, when I measure the perfs on 3452 I get 9.9. Go figure! Seems a bit inconsistent on the part of the Scott catalog.
To make it even worse, all 3 of the denominated SA stamps of the same design are listed as die-cut 9.75 ... and all measure the same 9.8 (or 9.75) as the non-denominated. This also seems a bit inconsistent (no rounding) on the part of Scott until you consider the fact that, for the denominated stamps, there are 3 different stamps to consider. For this reason, perhaps the accuracy of the die-cut gauge is considered more important for these.
Moral of the story ... don't expect the perf measurements in Scott to ALWAYS be exact.

I did got to the PNC and looked at the data pages. I also have their checklists but see no mention of a different perf. They often have more/different info from than Scott.

I have noticed that Scott does refine these over time since I have a list I created a few years ago and the Scott changed the perfs to 9.75 from 10 for a number of issues. I suspect as others that Scott rounds to nearest .25 unless there is a specific reason to show more granularity.

There is only one die cut measurement for all three stamps. The 10 is just a Scott thing! The only difference is in the color of the year and as a variety the jumbo stamp that measures a bit larger.
