Double Curl Scott 24

I just purchased a group of these, and found one of interest:



A note on the back said "Curl over C" and, yes, I definitely see a curl in that location:



But then, more obvious, is what I think is what is referred to as the "long double curl in hair". What do you think? Any plate number experts out there?



Note: The "curl" on the forehead is not really there ... I just brushed it off. Also looks like guide does in the lower right?

Yes, this is the long double curl variety. Position 52R8.

There was an excellent article in the February Chronicle for US Classics Society (USPCS) that talked about using consistent relief bruises for Type V/Va stamps to identify the Relief type instead of the traditional plate markings. Your stamp shows the consistent horizontal bruise towards the back of the hair near the level of the eye (coined "the baseball cap" since it is where the bottom edge of a baseball cap would be) that is seen with F Relief stamps (although the lighter the overall inking, the less apparent the bruise is). It is seen really well in your last photo, bisecting the large curl.

Lukusw, thanks for your informative response. I have quite a few of the Type V that I just picked up, so I'll be looking at them more closely for the relief bruise that you pointed out. To be honest, I was just going to refer to that bruise as a smudge, though looking more closely I now see it in several places.
