"Canadian Stamps with Perforated Initials" is the reference work I
have for Canadian perfins. There are 8 possible orientations of perfins
- they can be punched on the face or on the back of the stamp, and they
can be oriented up, down, left, right. Your stamp is designated as
having the perfin in Position 4 - face up, stamp rotated counter
clockwise 90 degrees. My copy is rotated 180 degrees relative to yours
- that's Position 2.
Unfortunately, no indication of rarity is given for the different
orientations. "The normal position, or Position 1, is the most common
position found for the majority of perfin types." I also have copies of
the 1c, 3c and 8c definitives in that series, and none of those are
Position 1 - all are either Position 2 or 4.
For each perfin type, there is an overall rarity factor listed, but
that accounts for all issues perforated with that perfin type. For
example, your perfin type (perfin number O8, Dominion of Canada 4-hole
OHMS first die) has a rarity factor of I, which is the most common
factor. But O8 is found on over 40 different stamps. We're lucky with
the OHMS perfin stamps, because as Blair noted, they're priced in the
Unitrade catalogue, but that's not the case with other perfins.
My copy of this book is getting a bit long in the tooth, 4th
Edition printed in 1985. It would be useful to have more info,
regarding prices and issue / position combos. The Unitrade website says
there's a new edition expected in 2005. Anybody know if it's out yet?
Your stamp is Unitrade number O235, valued in my 2002 catalogue (I
know, time for a new one) at CAN $0.25 used. Keep your eyes open for
OHMS stamps with a larger perfin, with the letter H being 5 holes high
instead of 4. CAN $10.00 for OA235.
