I had a wonderful time at NAPEX 2009 this Saturday. I brought 5 young children with me aged from 9 to 12. I was very happy and pleasantly surprised at how well all the folks at the show treated them. Every dealer that they spoke to took the time to answer any and all question and all went to great lengths to interest them and show them many interesting and often rare items. The kids section was wonderful as well. Several societies were present and also patiently answered all their questions, I went with the purpose of hoping they would get interested and excited about collecting and they did. As I type this four of them are sitting at the table sorting and trading stamps. Kudos to all the big time collectors who took the time to interest these new young collectors !

Yes Phil it was great it was the first time I had taken them to such a large show and the first time that I went not to study the exhibits and to buy and browse but to just share with them. They all has a blast and I think their excitement was contagious for all the older folks

Rick
Did you happen to purchase the Lincoln show covers or souvineer card for the kids as a memento of their first BIG show? I just sent off for mine and also mailed my own covers for the postmarks. I can't wait to add them to my collection.

yes the kids each got a souveneer cover, they really enjoy watching them each get hand cancelled. I also had someone from the Springfield stamp club give one of the kids a Homer Simpson FDC from Springfield Va. I am sure you will enjoy your covers. They did have a Cachet makers corner where the kids could have designed and drawn their own cover but we arrived too late for that.

That is an awesome way to get someone involved in stamps: Big show with a well done cachet and postmark, plus a FDOS Simpson cover.

This is the best way to get the children interested in stamp collecting. Follow-up with them, and let us know if there is anything we can help them with.

Good work, Rick!

That's great what you did with the kids, Rick. If only someone had done that with me years ago! I've helped a few kids get started collecting stamps here in Guatemala and it was satisfying to see how excited they were.
