They show up about once a month. At least 2 bidders have found this one. http://www.ebay.com/itm/131968534344

uboatnut: United States, regular issues, 1919 2c deep rose, Scott Catalog No. 500. No. 499 and 500 are similar.

Too much $$ for these and MH means they were hinged, if I read well !
At least he could learn the proper terminology !

The 500 appears to have a small thin at the top. Who knows what might lurk under a stray or intentional hinge remnant.

Renden,

The lot sold for $35. If the 2c were Scott 499 (cat = $.35) then they were high. But for a #500 the cat is $250.
I would say someone got a bargain, even with the gum thin, wouldn't you?

I am sure the seller is clueless and very happy with the result.

cjpalermo1964:

OK, I get it; "SC" = Scott Catalogue and "500" is the number. With all the characters run together (SC500), I did not recognize the term or make the connection.

I have that regular issue series in MNH - minus the #500 2˘ deep rose and the even more valuable #505 5˘ rose error. Both are on my Want list. I would only buy a certified #500. The rose color alone is sufficient proof of 505 vs. 506.

You don't necessarily need a certificate. You can buy from a dealer or seller, such as cfrphoto here, who is reliably correct in identifying Washington-Franklins. Or you can seek out a plate number single showing plate #10208 or #10209, which must be #500.

505's are usually bought in a block of 9 (single error) or 12 (double error) for eye appeal purposes, are hard to misidentify, and widely available, so it's just a matter of when you're ready to write a check. The major auctions usually have 3 or 4 per sale and they are readily available at non-auction retail dealers. I picked up 505 in a block of 9 at auction over the summer.

So is one really a 500? http://www.ebay.com/itm/122272201885 Image is pretty fuzzy but does it have the definition that might be expected? Not bidding on it; just trying to build my knowledge.

That stamp is not a # 500! Most likely a # 499.

There is no definition around the toga button.

I have messaged this seller in the past in regards to this same issue.
He has never responded or changed his ways. Beware!

Yes, that's what I was thinking. It seems sort of blotchy. Over inked?
