Rev,
I think only some images are in catalog (I have in front of me as I type) but rest can be obtained from website? When there are multiple items in lot they often don't put all images up to view except at website? Randy, must have got from website for auction?

Oh,
and that LO6 being auctioned by Kelleher is also a mess (imho) in 2nd scan from top from randy-- (No cert)-- I'll let you guys comment, but it looks used (doesn't exist used! per Scott) and is reperforated or perfs added at bottom (per the linguistic purists)? It is being auctioned as unused without gum as issued. Nothing about perfs in description. I wouldn't bid on it without a cert!

All images I have pictured were taken off the Kelleher on-line catalogue site. Auction #695 starting in a couple of days. Still time to bid. |

Randy,
I possibly plan to bid, but definitely not on carrier's and locals.
As you said, this area is a "minefield"!!
Its like buying penny stocks. Buy a whole bunch and maybe one will go up. The rest are just garbage.
For now I'll stick with regular stamps. Kinda wish there was an "expert" in this area on this forum (as there is with essays, revenues, officials, certain classic stamps) that could help us more. I appreciate everyone's help, but in the end it seems everyone is as confused and inexperienced with fakes/forgeries of locals and carriers as I am.
My guess is very few collect this stuff due to the rarity and complexity.

Chip,
that siegel sale from 1999 ("Golden") was incredible collection of carrier/locals-- the prices that they sold for in 1999 were incredible as well. I take back my last post. Someone is buying this stuff!! I guess collections like that one come around once a decade (or two)-- very helpful

Quote: ... My guess is very few collect this stuff due to the rarity and complexity ... My guess is that people find these in packets, remainder lots, etc, and set them aside on a page (or on a stock card or in a glassine envelope) with the others that have come before, much like any other specialty they do not actively collect (eg, precancels, perfins, what have you) or country they do not actively collect. We often chat about how many people bail out of the hobby when they find out that their 'starter' collection has no resale value; I wonder how many bail out (a bit later) because they don't want to jump thru the hoops to learn enough to avoid forgeries, fakes, repairs, re-perfs, re-gums ... Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

also, you should check out the Carriers and Locals society - http://www.pennypost.org/Right on their home page, they have a link for print-at-home album pages for carriers and locals. Get going! |

Was looking for something else and found that I had published this little sub-collection of Carriers and Locals. Took it as far as I could, exhibited it for a while, then sold it - mostly because I was the underbidder on the Wells Fargo stamp with the imprint illustrated on the last page - twice! It recently was offered again at Siegel in the sale of Irwin Weinberg's stock. I didn't bid on it, as the collection is gone. http://www.cgpostal.com/locals/locals.html |

So Dad had this ageing album stored away in the basement? His old local's reference collection perhaps? They are fascinating. And so are the fakes, and just as collectable! Some Officials also? All Right Dad! |
