(Ot) Do You Live In A Lincoln Highway Community?

Lincoln Highway was the US's first coast to coast highway beginning in New York and ending in California. The heyday of the highway was from 1919-1925. After 1925 the Federal & State Highway Commissions changed all "named" highways to a numbering system. In Joliet IL, the Lincoln Highway and Route 66 both run alongside each other for a few blocks. This could be considered the the joining of the "Father road and Mother road". Dwight D Eisenhower struggled along the Lincoln Highway while on a military convoy and saw the need for a better interstate system, which he begun during his Presidentcy in 1958.

I have lived in four states, but never on on this highway... interesting.

Of course, the Lincoln Highway now exists as a historic byway and would not be named such on current maps-it would be a numbered highway, route, business loop, etc. Most people may not even realize they live on or near one of the many historic roadways- unless they pay attention to sign markers & local history. Of course, after you notice them & take an interest it is hard not to look for more.

Cool..I guess that explains why I saw several references to the Lincoln highway and several Lincoln Historic markers called out on our recent car trip in and arfound Iowa. It was my intention to ask you, our resident Lincoln guru, what the connection was. Thanks for the enlightenment. I only wish this old brain could retain all this new knowledge I pick up on this forum.

Thanks for the kudos about being a "lincoln guru". Do you have any pictures from your trip? What I think is cool about the Lincoln Highway is that on 1 day in 1928 over 3,000 concrete mile markers were placed by boy scouts along the entire length of the bicoastal highway. Sorry 'dude'. No pictures, I would have probably taken some if I known where we were or the significance of the signs. At the time I was just zooming past and wondering. Maybe next time around especially now that I know somebody cares.
