Unfortunately this is just a cut corner piece. Would someone have bothered to cobble together a forgery like this? If so, is that the culprits finger print?
I have no immediate opinion on the item in question, other than if its faked, its pretty well done.
I will say that the faker of the famous Consul Klep cover - strip of 3 Scott #12's left his fingerprint on the strip, so there is a precedent for what you say.
Not so much thinking it's fake, but thinking it could be fake.
I have little experience with locals. I do have some Husseys and Allen Dispatch that I've tried to ID. It seems with locals, there's a lot of reprints and forgeries.
Now that I've spent some time looking at my messenkopes piece, I see the left edge is actually underneath the three cent stamp.

Stampcrow - yes, there are a lot reprints and forgeries of carrier and local stamps. The area is one of the more challenging in US Philately, but is also one of the most interesting. One of the things that can really help is building a reference collection of fakes and forgeries. After some study many of the fakes become obvious. Here is my page of Messenkopes fakes.
