i always look for U.S. covers of the 2 cent red Washington type of 1890 to 1897..a zillion of them were printed and the covers are very inexpensive..most less than a dollar..so I can be selective and pick the ones that appeal to me and leave the rest...i will show a couple...

heres just one more typical one...the catalog values of the stamps vary with the catalog number but I do not worry too much about that..i am buying the cover not the stamp..whats my point ? I guess its that you can collect a topic without spending serious money !

I agree, that first one has beautiful penmanship! That alone would make it a collectible in my book. You just don't see that kind of penmanship anymore!

I agree with the beautiful script. Not seen much if at all these days. There are enough cancellations on covers like these for a great collection and display.

Phil,
Did you notice on your 1st cover that the addressee spells the city "Galesburg" and the postmark cancel is spelled "Galesburgh" and the "G"'s look like a "C". I know a lot of cities changed their spellings dropping the "H"'s from ..burgh
I find that interesting.
