Gutter Snipes

A question about the attached "Gutter snipes"
I have a number of these singles(not all shown)
is there a value over and above the normal cv.
Numbers available are:
Shown in scan: all Mnh 1275,1263,1213,1208,1129,1128,
not shown but scans available:All Mnh 1281,1289,1290,1307,1399,1409
1504,1471,1276,1278, #1506,1420. are Used.

Is there a rarity factor to these snipes.

I don't think so on modern issues. On a valuable stamp, selvage can't hurt.

YES! These are called "gutter snipes". The gutter should have been cut down the middle to seperate a sheet into two panes.

Though not all that uncommon, a premium of 25% is usually what is applied.

First, let me say I have not come across the term 'Gutter snipes' in Philately...which means it is probably American or Canadian

In my book, a stamp with a gutter remaining would be deemed to be worth the same as a single stamp. Now if it were to be a pair with a Central gutter there would be a mark-up...sometimes quite substantially so. For some GB and Israel stamps there are some nice scarce 'Gutter' pairs. But as DJD showed in his scans, I would say no added value at all, except for maybe the 'Mr Zip' item which would be mostly novelty value.

The scan above shows a Block of 4 with gutters and tete beche. A good mark up on 4 singles with or without gutters.



The above scan shows a full Tete-Beche sheet with gutters. The 'Gutter' pairs are Tete-beche, the central block of 4 with Gutters has an even bigger value.

How much ? Well, I guess that's supply and demand.

My views only and about GB and Israel. I cannot be certain about USA or other countries.

wow! and to think as a youngster, I used to separate stamps from their "edges" or gutters as you would say. and throw out the "excess"!

We all did things as youngsters that would make us cringe today. I used to lick the top of a mint stams to put in in an album. I also used a strip of scotch tape to hold coins in the little hole in the album, although tape residue can be removed. Once stamp gum is removed, it's gone. AH-the innocence (and ignorance) of youth.

I was not sure if the "Tag" snipes was a correct term.
I must disagree on the rarity factor,although I do not know,
I feel they are much scarcer than the regular cut.
I have looked through many kilo ware lots and only come across
Two used copies.
I do agree that the rarity does not equate to a comparable value
IE: 100 x scarcer = 100 x the value.
I have them for sale at $2.00-$3.00 each,if not sold then I may
Save them and try to find more.

I think people around here go hunting for gutter snipes - at night, in the middle of the swamp and usually when "likered up."

ok another silly question from me what is a gutter snipe? just extra paper? cause I have some of those,do they have to have paper on more than 1 side?

Ha! I am picturing Greg hunkered down with a canvas bag & flashlight Snipe hunting. LOL! We use to initiate new scouts at camp by going Snipe hunting. Then again we also told them stories of Yeti's in central Illinois. Ah, the memories.

In Arkansas they call thm Skunk Men. They exist - I saw it on the Internet so it has to be true.
