Catalog value is always a rule of thumb. You also have to consider what your budget is in advance. I have no experience with Graded or Certified stamps, therefore I can't add much to the conversation. I collect for enjoyment & you really can't put a price on that (unless you talk to my wife).

Devlin I STRONGLY SUGGEST against writing in the album...i ruinned one or two collections doing that when I started out...no one likes to look at a marked up album !!

Good point. Maybe printing off some stock album pages and adding the notations there instead of by the stamps themselves would be a better idea.
