There seems to be some interest in US airmail stamps so as part of my quest to get 50 posts I thought I would share my current find. I have been going through a collection I acquired from a stamp collector whose album was permanently closed a number of years ago. Every now and then I would find a plate number single. I didn't think too much of it until it dawned on me that I was finding a lot of C32's. I put them together and lo and behold: I have three boxes to check yet. Do you think I will find 23485 and 23494? Dan

Very cool indeed. I am impressed. The only thing better would have been if they were all from the same plate position. Good luck on the other two. |

Dan, Very nice!! I like to collect US airmail PBs by number and position. For this stamp, there are a total of 32 different plate numbers. 23485 23494 23504 23506-23510 23515 23517-23518 23523-23526 The 2 numbers that are relatively more difficult to find are 23424 and 23525. You're already past the halfway point. Have fun looking! k |

khj, Thanks for the informative post! I've never given much thought to collecting PB's. I may give it a try with this issue! Do you focus on one particular PB position or go for them all? I imagine the latter can be very challenging. My hopes are dimming for finding additional C32's but I did find a Washington imperf chucked among the PB singles. I also found this little tidbit of postal history. I probably should post it in the Covers forum but it isn't really worth a new thread. I have no clue if it is authentic or not -- it's just interesting piece to add to my collection. Dan |

Its a tremendous philatelic journey you have set out on. Congratulations!
I'm on a similar bit of a trip myself. I'm collecting the four plate block positions for every known plate block number for the airmail issues I like.
khj has helped with some research and will help fill in some of my holes as she gets the chance. |

Dan, I used to collect US definitive and airmail PBs by all numbers and all positions. Yes, that is Robert McCall's authentic signature on that UR plate block of 8. While it is not rare and the market is not that large, it is considered a premium item. Laswabbie, Quote: khj has helped with some research and will help fill in some of my holes as she gets the chance. Last time I checked, she is a he. And yes, I brought the PBs and my UV lamp with me on my road trip. I should be able to pull a dozen or so PBs for you! But I will need to examine their condition first. k |

Given that the issue quantity was 864,753,100, I doubt if any are really difficult to come by. |

Wow! This is an ancient thread! I still periodically hunt for these. I now have 30 of the 32 plate numbers. I'm missing 23524 and 23525. The number quoted by Revcollector is for the entire issue of 32 plates. It would be interestng to see the number issued by plate number. I doubt that it is evenly distributed. Some plate numbers pop up much more frequently than others. Regardless, there are probably a lot of them still out there. When I do find a number I am missing, it doesn't command any premium. I think the reason why some numbers are difficult to find is that there are few PB collectors anymore and since a C32 has a low market value people don't bother to offer them for sale individually. It's the hunt that's fun. Dan |

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example. I collect for enjoyment, not investment. APS Member #223433 Postmark Collectors Club Member #6333 Meter Stamp Society Member #1409 |
