As far as I know, the first Europa stamps were issued in 1956.
This is an interesting story about the history of Europa(CEPT) stamps.

Hehe... nothing stays a secret. Many thanks, it is indeed a milestone. At least that is what everybody cannot stop saying. I do not think I will be online this weekend either. Big party tomorrow and a nice quiet day with my lovely girlfriend on the big day itself.

Interesting bit of history there, Jan-Simon; thanks for the link. It's funny how the designs strayed from the yearly common design (which for a unified Europe ideal makes sense) for speculative reasons (how do we get people to buy these stamps and not use them?).

I think all/most CEPT countries agreed in early 1970's that a common theme serves national purposes better than a common design.

As for speculative reasons.... Well, I would NOT definitely blame postal administrations for this. They just issue stamps that they hope people will buy (and use). It's the money-hungry collectors/investors/stamp dealers who blew it all up. LOL.
