Here's another of my oddball covers.
Anyone care to guess what his retirement plans were??

I knew the collector. All four stamps are "cancelled." It is addressed to his home but unfortunately I can no longer find out if it was actually sent in the mail.

What amazes me is how he got someone in the Post Office to make that cancellation. When I try to get even a simple hand stamp they look at me with suspicion and/or irritation (maybe that's a personal problem though )
"Would you please hand cancel this envelope? I would like it if you lightly...." BAM! BAM!... "Next!"

Do you go to a major post office? Seems like small town POs are usually friendlier and willing to accommodate collectors.
One of the nice things about Guatemala, postal clerks here are accommodating. One of the post masters I know even gives me the ink pad and rubber stamp so that I can hand cancel the stamps personally.

At least you get a cancel, before I can finish sometimes a meter is already being slapped on.

Oh have I ever been there before. I only wish of a stamp friendly Post Office unlike our McPost Office.

Very nice cover and great idea.

In the U.S., small Post Offices rule! I've had experience with three -- in International Falls, Bemidji, and Roseau (all in Minnesota), and the clerks were always up to doing things such as this to my specifications, even including slightly cancelling multiple stamps on the same envelope.

Marty,

You're absolutely right. I live equidistant between a "major" post office and one that is just a tad bigger than my bathroom.

I always go to the smaller PO to get a cancel.

What amazes me about the cover I posted is that I lived in that city for a number of years and there was only one PO. They were the surliest group of clerks I've ever encountered.

Dan,
I have the same problem with some of the clerks here at my local office. I've made the comment on another post that I was told that they, (the clerks) don't do hand cancels anymore. I'm still trying to find the postal regulations that state they can. I'm so looking forward to going in and saying, "Yes you can!"

I go to the MSP Airport PO which is huge. Maybe it's Minnesota nice, but I don't usually have an issue. Sometimes it's personnel & Management.

They should be able to cite you the regulation that prohibits hand cancels! They still do it here.
