Which Year Shall I Collect?

I have always wanted to do a worldwide collection of a given year in philately, but was hampered by album ideas. I have since resolved the problem as I now know how to make nice album pages on my computer.

Okay, folks, here's what I need from you...

I need your suggestion of a year to collect, between 1955-1975, and why you think I should collect it.

A few points to consider...
1. The collection will be of used stamps (and a few covers), and interesting postmarks.
2. It cannot be the years 1965 nor 1967.

I will be looking at also doing a calendar collection for the year. A calendar collection is one that has a stamp postmarked for each day of the year!

Help me on my journey to a worldwide collection for stamps issued in one given year.

I would choose the year of my birth. It's a great idea, I like it a lot. Make sure you post your progress. Why not those particular years?

I like 1971 as that was the year I remember having a real interest in stamp collecting and really getting into stamp collecting.

Canada had the maple leaf four seasons stamps, the CBC stamp the Paul Kane art stamp, and the snow flake Christmas stamps.

Stamps are starting to be more 3D and colourful than just one dimensional then. Almost photographic.

Fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of insulin, which I take every day so I quite enjoy the Canada insulin stamp of 1971.

Mostly personal reasons I guess.

so how about the hundredth birthday of stamps "1940"
I like also "1964"
Starting with the "World peace" issue ,encompassing the Provincial flowers and coat of arms,The Charlotte and Quebec conferences and the royal visit by our Queen.
And only a couple of definitive issues.

I would probably have chosed a year from the 1930's because I like that era of stamps more.

But, given your criteria, I would choose 1969 because that was the year I graduated from high school and started my first career (as a college drop out and draftee).

No, I'd say 1969 because that was a pivitol year in the history of mankind. It was the year we fulfilled President Kennedy's grand vision:

For some reason unknown to me 1960 poped into my head. I have no Idea why. I'll do some checking to see if there are some good topic that year.

David...to make thing simple and easy, I would choose any year prior to May 1, 1840

But to be serious,and since you collect the Reign of King George the 6th, why not tie in that collection with a second collection of 1952 stamps, the year he passed. Consider all the stamps issued for Queen Elizabeths Coronation

In 1957 the world changed dramaticly with the launch of Sputnik......maybe you felt it also.

Now a few responses and questions answered.

I tried it once before with 1965. That's the year of my birth. I followed the wrong album system and blew it. That's why Bobgggg said "Oh no, not again".

I scratched 1967 as it was Canada's Centennial year, and the hosting of Expo '67. Lot's of countries issued stamps to honour that year. I've seen many of them.

I don't recall 1957, I wasn't there.

I'm leaning toward 1960, 1970, and 1973.

I'm still open to comments and suggestions.

I would take 1960- the year I came to USA! The year 1970 in my Europa collection I like a lot as it was the year of the Eur. Nature Protection and I like the flora & scenery stamps a lot ... Jopie

1976 -- American Bicentennial, Montreal Olympics...'nuff said.

How about 1970..... It's the 100th anniversary of the death of Charles Dickens, (1812-1870) and the 200th Anniversary of the birth of William Wordsworth. (1770-1850)

all the more reason to do it again, and get it right this time! ('65 is my birth-year as well)

David, if you are leaning towards 1960, 1970 and 1973, I would cross out 1973 and you will not have to worry about Machin heads from G.B.
