Is it just me or is that a very odd portrait of Lincoln on the 25 cent news papers and periodicals? It seems that the perspective is from below the bust. And the nose is huge. In any case, IMO, it is a very unflattering rendering of Lincoln. Of course from many accounts I have read of Lincoln, he had an unusual face. |

That's probably the view most people saw of him rohumpy, He was a towering man, who's prescence was immediate, I have a picture of him somewhere amongst his generals at a tent camp, and the fellow casts a shadow on everybody, that hat of his wouldn't have helped.

I think the size of the stamp adds to the effect. When there is so much more under the bust than we usually see (I'm not going anywhere near that one!). But it might give it a lower perpective. |

Why the prevalence of such high values - was sending periodicals and that really so expensive - or these were for putting the high quantities into distribution? |

Newspaper/Periodical stamps were issued in denominations up to $100. Considering the stamps were all discontinued in 1898, that was quite a sum for a stamp back in the day. According to the Scott catalog, these stamps were used on "bulk shipments" of newspapers and periodicals and after 1875, were generally affixed to a receipt book rather than on the shipment itself. |

I have lots of them and if I could figure out how to post the scans I would be happy to do them. In fact I would like to sell them all. Scott values them at around $20,000 |

Seeing this is not strictly limited to US stamps (at least not any more) here's a newspaper stamp from the Azores 1882. A little worse for wear. I'd just love to find one of these babies in situ, like Rod's Austrians. |

I agree with rohumpy's comment about the Lincoln periodical stamp. I made similar comments on another posting of this stamp sometime last year. But as Lincoln famously said, "If I were two faced, would I be wearing this one?" |
