Was the tinfoil the entire tobacco packaging, or was this somehow wrapped around the packaging?

History behind the Tin Foils(Very Short and Super Edited version). Prior to the Stamp Tax Act of 1862. Tobacco taxes were collected by sworn statement. With the advent of this Act a stamp was required on all packages. It was cheeper to have them printed on the package than pay somone to affix them. They also didn't have to be concerned with them falling off. The Fed. didn't have to be concerned with them being removed and reused. Win win for every one. All are rare, I don't think any survive in quantities larger than 50 or so! If you are interested in these you might want to pick up John Alan Hicks book on the subject it goes for about $65-$75. But, hunt around I bought mine at The Strand in NYC a few years ago for $45 used but you would never have known it! Happy Hunting

VERY COOL! I do like those postal savings cards. It is always neat to see the proper booklets, sheets that the savings stamps are meant to be attached too.

The Tin Foil was actually Lead foil with a thin Tin coating. Tin was to expensive to be used by it's self. It was the actual package. The reason so few survive is as the tobacco was used the package was folded, bent, twisted, etc. to seal what was remaining and keep it fresh. when you were done it was tossed or reused for another purpose. The on good thing is that with little effort you can remove the creases and have a really nice looking piece. By the way this scan was reduced by 50% and cropped.

The Postal Savings Cards are actually Sc# PS2 and PS5. They have never had a picture of them in the catalog and most have never seen them so I thought I would post them. The PS5 has 3 additional stamps added.

You ain't seen nothing yet! Maybe over the weekend I'll post some of my Lic. & Royalty stuff. 1 of them was used for my avatar. It's from the N.Y. Rubber Co. 6 are known including 1 Proof. They were attached to the packaging or item. They showed that you had obtained a License to Mfg.(for a fee) "Hollow Balls" under their Patent. The full stamp can be seen under "Revstampman Avatar".

Make me an offer. The PS2 is a very tough one to find! It took me Years(about20) to get one! In my opinion it is very undervalued. However it is a bit rough. This is the 1st that I found. I paid full Cat for it. I now I have a pristine one In my collection. That one cost me full Cat. + about 30%. Email me, I'm sure we can work something out.

I collect All U.S. Revenues and Tax Paids. I also will trade for stamps that I already have. I try to be as reasonable as possible. I also will sometimes trade for WW rev's.

Here are some similar stamps I found while going through my grandmother's collection. I find these interesting, apparently they made stamps for all kinds of stuff. What book would have values for these types of stamps, or are they even popular stamps to collect?

Defense Postal Savings Booklet

one of many Motor Vehicle Stamps from the 1940's

1916 Wine Stamp

Illinois Beer stamp, the small holes spell "Miller", and I am guessing a date.
