Is anyone willing to give an opinion on whether this postage due from Danzig looks authentic? Thanks for your time.

Collin

Colin, I am no expert ..but it does look a bit crude..on the few examples I have the four squares in the lower right corner are more filled in..do not show as much white..lets hear from some of our German area specialists...

I'm not qualified to render an opinion, but here's a scan of another copy from that set to compare it against.

P.S. this one has a plate flaw on the middle '0.'

note Phil's comment about the filled in boxes.

These stamps are plentiful in mint condition and yet I only have a couple in my album...you would wonder why someone would want to forge or counterfeit them ????

It "looks" genuine to me. The print is actually pretty clear on your copy. Most don't look so nice because of plate usage/wear -- squares/gaps start filling in, borders get thicker... You may have a stamp from the earlier part of the print run.

The only fault in your stamp is the bits of color loss in the background and lines. I'm wondering if it might have "stuck" a little to the stamp placed above it sometime in its history.

I find this series can come in several shades, as well.

That is correct, and a good point to make.

Thanks for bringing that up!

Something else I just remembered, in case you are interested in varieties. The watermarks are pretty easy to see on most of the Danzig. Some of the stamps come in both upright and sideways watermarks, even though it is not mentioned in the Scott catalog.

Thanks to all. Very helpful! It just looks brighter and "snappier" than what I've been familiar with, but I'm going to go with the "earlier in the print run" option. That works well for me.

Collin,

I am a bit curious. Assuming it is still gummed, is there any ink adhesion on the back of stamp?

k-

They're billed as hinged, with no mention of adhesion. I was skeptical about the look and intended to pass on purchasing the lot, but after asking here, I decided to give it a shot. Your theory about early print runs seems plausible enough. If I learn anything interesting upon receipt, I'll post it.

Thanks again for the assistance.

Collin

It's always a little bit of fun taking a bit of a fling on occasion Collin. Do share the results of your experience.
