Does Anyone Know About Route 66 ?

But I do have a serious question -- is there a definitive definition of the east and west endpoints of Route 66? Or are they fuzzy, depending on who you ask?

I'm pretty dumb on the subject. A lot of I-40 is built on the old R66 -- is that correct?

You got my attention. I thought I had an old thread that was resurrected. The answer is Yes. The Eastern terminus is Chicago IL and the Western terminus was Los Angeles CA. Most 66'ers feel the ends are unofficially Navy Pier at the shore of Michigan Lake and Santa Monica Pier at the shore of the Pacific Ocean.

Yes, Interstates 40 and 55 officially replaced much of Highway 66. It had begun to be bypassed completely in 1977 in IL and the last section was officially decommissioned in 1984. You can still drive around 90-95% of the roadbed today.

The interstates actually run next to several original sections of Route 66 and several of the interstate business loops are alignments of US 66. Many main streets and major roads in towns were 66, some still go by Old Highway 66. I can suggest some good websites, forums, books, & maps if you need them.

I didn't know Chicago was in there. I figured somewhere south of there; maybe L.A. (Lower Alabama)

I remember the old songs names a lot of stops along R-66, but it's been a while since I've heard it.

I must have been thinking of the A1A scenic highway along the Eastern coast of Florida that I drove part of last year.

I lived in a trailer park on Rt. 66 just outside Springfield, MO for four or five years while I was growing up. I spent all my spare time looking for Tod and Buzz to come cruising by in their Corvette. They never did stop by.
