The phantasies produced by the American C.L.Matt
for his "Atlantis" stamps were in values of "Skalog"

Rod22, The Sutherland & Co (John W. Sutherland) was an actual local post in Japan, started in 1867, the stamps believe to have issued between 1870 & 1871 handling letters & parcels prior to the the establishment of Japan's postal system. The route was run by American style stagecoach connecting Tokyo, Yokohama & Odawara.
The boo was a currency, but what it's based on is not determined.

These may be of interest - the first is a pdf article on the Sutherland Stamps (http://si-pddr.si.edu/dspace/bitstr...rsion_3.pdf) and the second is a link to the Stamp News Australasia site mentioned in the footnote on the second page of the pdf article - http://www.stampnews.com.au/inside.htm.

It seems that there is an entire article dedicated to "What is a boo" in the November 2007 edition, but the link gives a 404 - maybe if you email and ask nicely they'll send you the article?

Before the other members get upset, I would like to point out, that our whaling station in Albany closed many years ago.

I am wondering, can "Unusual stamp currencies",
be broadened to include "unusual currencies on stamps"?
what do you think?

Steve, The El Salvador currency "Colon" is Spanish for "Columbus", as in Christopher. Costa Rica's currency is also Colon or Colones (pl). Back to El Salvador; the US dollar is now the preferred currency and maybe the only currency. Many years ago, Ecuador officially made the US dollar their currency and several years later El Salvador followed. The US dollar is also legal currency in Guatemala although we have kept the Quetzal as official national currency.
